Actually, it's very unlikely if "Then She Found Me" will take in the bucks that a new James Bond or Indiana Jones movie might do. But I just saw an advanced screening last night through Film Independent with Hunt present for q and a. I must say I was extremely satisfied. A chick flick this is, but it's a masterful one and I highly recommend it. Gestating for ten years, she took the plunge as co-producer, co-writer, played the lead character and made her directorial feature debut of this tale of broken trusts and betrayals.
I will do my best not to reveal any spoilers as there are many surprises here and probably best seen without even seeing the trailer. I will say there's a strong Jewish theme that the novel this was based on had and Hunt saw no reason to change that. In fact, atonement is very big in the Jewish faith. It starts off with her getting married to Matthew Broderick and we quickly find out that he's totally pathetic and selfish.
Hunt gets outstanding performances from Colin Firth and Bette Midler whose own characters have their own baggage that Hunt's character is forced to deal with. That in itself is what makes "Then She Found Me" so refreshing. We human beings are so imperfectly perfect and the issues the players here play with are quite believable. On top of everything else, Helen Hunt's character has a baby time clock and she's no longer a spring chicken.
As an actress, she is as good as she was in "As Good As It Gets". Actually, there is some "borrowed" dialog towards the ending from that, but that's a moot point. It's perfectly acceptable to repeat what one has done before especially if it was done well. How many times has Woody Allen copied himself and seems to get more self centered each time? With this film, Helen Hunt has proved a woman can also make an excellent film of fractured relationships, a genre he did help invent.
In closing, I do hope this film gets the attention it deserves. Like a lot of geeks, I sit through a lot of films and most disappoint or I find myself looking at my watch. Not so with this one, I found this to be very insightful and entertaining.

Way back, when the state of the art in computer graphics was 280x192 in 8 colors, and no such thing as CGI effects existed, Jim Henson made a beautiful classic little fantasy film called, "The Dark Crystal." Long before the movie was released to theatres in the US and UK, it was provided to test audiences for reactions. The surveys taken at the showings, guide the filmmakers and producers in how to tweak and make final edits to the film. I GOT TO SEE IT THIS WAY!
As a kid, I was overjoyed with this, it was better than ANYTHING else provided for kids at the time (I still LOVE this film!). Jim Henson was a GOD!
Unfortunately, the test audience comprised a large number of mundanes and the dramatic challenged, people better suited to be couch-potatos, not theatre-goers. It was rumored that kids ran from the theatre... I don't remember that, I think idiot parents were horrified, maybe because there were no humans in it?!?
When the movie was finally released to theatres, I got a shock, when what I had been waiting to see again was chopped up, and dumbed down. It was great to finally see most of the special effects, but the film became hobbled, and the benefit of paying attention to get all the details was destroyed by having everything explained plainly or tossed in your face. These variations may not seem that big, but they were very noticeable to me... and I had waited so long to see this film again.
Then I attended The Answer, "The Rat Stuff!," a.k.a. the 42nd WorldCon in Los Angeles. There I found a large number of fans of the film, most who were twice my age at the time, and one of them knew a person who knew another person.... And so after waiting several more weeks, I received this precious little videotape in the mail. It was a copy of a workprint of the film, used to review different background music soundtracks to the film (anybody remember "Legend" where it was released in the UK with a Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack, and in the US with Tangerine Dream?). The first two were Trevor Jones (the actual choice, a strikingly beautiful OST, like all his work) and Vangelis. Unfotunately the VHS tape was not long enough for more than 15 minutes of the Vangelis material.
So, after my last move, I dove into my 3000 tape VHS collection and fished out that old tape, and encoded it. Hopefully you will enjoy it, if not as a curiosity, an example of what minor things can be done to a film by others, a better version, or at least a view of what is, effectively, the directors cut of the movie.
Some things to be aware of before you watch this:
1. It is a WORK-PRINT, it was never intended to be anything but a quick hack together by the editors to test things like timing, edit points, level corrections, etc.
2. This is in black & white. My assumption is that they used monochrome stock because it was cheaper to deal with and it was not at the stage for color work.
3. As a work-print, edits, cuts, and notes are actually marked on the film with both grease-pencil and marker. You will see a lot of this. As an edit test, light levels also were not a concern, and therefore black and white levels vary considerably from one scene to another. This made it impossible for me to do any correction work. A filter might clean up one scene but completely destroy the next.
4. The film stock was actually handled by a very large number of people, and ended up picking up lots of dirt. Again having a dirty print did not matter for this work print, image clarity was not important.
5. The work print was transferred first to professional videotape, each of the small spools of film were transferred, so between each of the nearly dozen small spools of film, there was a hard analog videotape break, with all the expected audio and video noise. I edited most of these out, and that was nearly 3 minutes of hashing and breakups.
6. That tape was then transferred to VHS from which my copy of the tape was made. Unfortunately, this was a long time ago and image stabilization was not yet a large part of the electronics of the consumer VHS market. Therefore, any time there was a little jump or a little noise in the original tape, the machine could not maintain the image and it often lost a lock on the image. Noise on the original tape made for chaos on the copies, and this is most apparent during the Skesis' banquet segment.
7. Many of the special effects, and things like the titles and credits, were not present at this stage of work, so odd things tend to show up in places. Characters appearing on black or grey backgrounds (greenscreen), only a small area of the screen is used because a matte would be added later, seeing a bit of the English countryside in a shot, or seeing an oddly shaped object ascending on a rope in place of the special effect of the Ur-skeks ascension... A few of the voices are even a little different (or missing).
Of the things you will notice in variance from the released film are the cutting of several scenes (notably a close-up of naked Jen, and the Skesis funeral), re-arrangement of some of the scenes (mostly from the start of the film), trimming of some scenes (Podling villager festival), the addition of voice-overs (lord was that distracting), added narration, and a complete re-dub of all the non-English languages.
In the test version, English represented the Gelfling tongue -- you should hear only English when Gelfling is spoken... Every other race had it's own language, but the final film changed that, and you really have to look hard to see that all the races did not speak the same language. I must have been an odd child, because I didn't have any problem understanding the gist of what was being said, when the characters didn't speak English. I find that touch added quite a lot to the proper feel of the film.
This encode is the best balance of file-size versus quality I could get from the source. If anybody wants to try enhancing this, feel free, but it's probably not worth it.
Since there was probably only one copy of the test audience print (35mm clean color version of this), and no sign of this version of the film on any of the seven releases (soon to be eight) of the film to the consumer market, I am guessing that this may be the only surviving version of the film in this form.  I hope it isn't, because I would love to see this in HQ color.

Asylum (1972)
One of the best horror films ever but...
*Note* If you like films like SAW or Hostel you most probably will not like this type of horror film. So it might be worth reading the following before you download.
'Dr Martin (Powell) has been invited to the asylum of the title to be interviewed for a doctor’s job. Things are looking promising, but rather than just checking out his CV and phoning a few of his references, his prospective boss Dr Rutherford (Patrick Magee, who seemed to get typecast as a doctor in the early 70s, despite looking more like a particularly unsavoury patient) has other things in mind. After revealing that the place is “an asylum for the incurably insaneâ€, Rutherford explains why he’s in a wheelchair (“Never turn your back on a patientâ€) and then reveals that his associate, Dr Starr, has jumped psychiatrist ship and joined the mentalist ranks housed in the rooms upstairs. Starr has taken on a dual personality.
“If you can recognise who is - or was - Dr Starr, I’ll consider you for the position,†growls Rutherford.
Martin makes his way into the bowels of the hospital past a series of lithograph prints depicting old methods of mental healthcare, that get more bizarre the further he goes.
He’s greeted by “Max Reynolds†(Geoffrey Bayldon) the orderly, who shows him to the first of the four patients he must interview, a girl called Bonnie, and the fun begins in earnest...'

"Have I got your attention, mister?" By the time you reach this line in Takashi Miike's Imprint, the answer will be a resounding, horrified "Yes!" This much-rumored-about episode of Showtime's Masters of Horror series became notorious as the first installment to be denied an airing. Now that the hour-long episode is out on DVD, it's not difficult to see why the network balked (although on the other hand, if you have a series called Masters of Horror and you hire the outrageous Takashi Miike to helm a show, nobody should really be surprised). The story follows an American (Billy Drago) on a journey to a ghostly island bordello in Japan; he's searching for a girl he lost years before. The prostitute he meets has stories to tell--and they abound in incest, abortion, murder, and one of the grisliest torture scenes ever produced for a mainstream outlet.

In 1925, when LEATHERHEADS takes place, professional football is a joke, especially when compared to its more respected college cousin. Teams across the country are folding, and player Dodge Connelly will do anything to keep his own team, the Duluth Bulldogs, from folding. The enterprising (read: scheming) Dodge steals Princeton star and war hero Carter Ruthford from his school, and soon the Bulldogs are winning, but it’s the game of football that is the real champion as fans pack the stadiums. Meanwhile, reporter Lexie Littleton begins investigating Rutherford’s past, thanks to a tip from one of the star’s old war buddies that he may not be all he seems. The pre-regulation football is dirty, but it’s far cleaner than the action when Dodge and Carter vie for Lexie’s affections.

Plot summary for
Blood Diamond
In 1999, in Sierra Leone, the fisherman Solomon Vandy dreams on the day that his young son Dia Vandy will become a doctor. His dreams are shattered when the rebels invade his village and kidnap him to work in the diamond mines. Solomon finds a huge pink diamond and while hiding it, the commandant of the rebels sees, but the rebels are attacked and Salomon is arrested by the government army. While in jail, the wounded commandant tell the prisoners that Salomon found the stone, and the mercenary smuggler Danny Archer from Zimbabwe releases Salomon and proposes to exchange the diamond by his missing family. Using the idealistic American journalist Maddy Bowen, Danny locates the wife and daughters of Salomon in a refugee camp, but is informed that his son has been recruited by the rebels. Salomon and Danny consolidate a partnership, with Salomon looking for and finding his son, and Danny looking for the diamond and finding redemption.
